About
Friends of the late Mike Morrissey and of the Takoma Park Library have joined together each September to honor his memory and fondness for our Takoma Park Library. The fundraiser has grown each year. In 2006, there were 80 paricipants. By 2007, the sixth year of the tournament, the group had reached an all-time record for donations at $37,000.
In early December 2007, tournament organizers Ceil Madden, Steve DuBos, and Ken Gill, along with several of Mike’s friends, visited the Library for an informal reception with Library staff and members of the Friends of the Library. They presented Robbins with a check for $6,500—-exceeding the prior year’s donation.
Each year, following the golf tournament, the staff at Rumors Restaurant in Dupont Circle hosts the library staff, golfers and Mike’s friends and relatives while an auction of donated goods and services adds to the day’s proceeds.
In 2008, Takoma Park’s Mayor and City Council wanted to show the City’s appreciation for the group’s continued and selfless hard work on behalf of the Library. At their January 7, 2008 council meeting, Mayor Bruce Williams presented Stan Barouh, a close friend of the late Morrissey, with an official proclamation of appreciation. The Mayor and Council thanked the group for enabling the Friends to fund the Library’s Summer Quest reading program for children, Spanish Story Time for pre-schoolers, a new large capacity book return, children’s room shelving and support for computers in the Computer Learning Center, as well as many other contributions.
